This client knew exactly what he wanted and was very helpfully with providing a number of sketches to articulate his desires. Often the customer knows what they want, but choose to with hold their ideas just to see if the designer and create something different or better. If you want to create a product you will be happy with from the get-go, then communicate this to your designer at the start of your project. You will be happy you did!
